"AT THE INTERSECTION OF SPECIALISED DISCOURSES: HETEROGENEITY AND UNITY"
31st GERAS conference, University of Nice Sophia-Antipolis, March 18th to 20th 2010

The topics covered by the 2010 GERAS Conference in Nice reflect the continuing focus of the scientific association’s research on the multiplicity and unity of English for Specific Purposes. The 2008 conference looked at the theme of distance/proximity in ESP. The 2009 conference raised issues about the stages leading from non-specialisation to specialisation. In 2010 it seems appropriate to move the focus towards the question of intersections between different ESP discourses.

The 22nd European Systemic Functional Linguistics
COMPLEXITIES OF MEANING IN TEXT
Pedagoška Fakulteta Koper, 9-12.7.2010

We strongly encourage paper submissions to ESFLCW10 to address the theme of 'complexities of meaning in text' in one of the following ways.
∗ Systemic Functional Linguistic theory
∗ Appraisal theory
∗ Coherence and cohesion
∗ Genre and intertextuality
∗ Multimodal texts - multimodality
∗ Critical discourse analysis
∗ Human language production and/or understanding
∗ Computational linguistics
∗ The practical analysis of the clause, text, and/or
discourse.

We would also like to encourage submissions which link SFL with related linguistic theories where meaning also plays an important role (for example, other functional approaches, psycholinguistics, cognitive linguistics, etc.). Papers focusing on other core concepts in SFL will also be accepted. Research on languages other than English is strongly encouraged. We also welcome submissions representing work in progress.

EAP in university settings: teacher and learner competencies

18th & 19th June, 2010
Bilkent University School of English Language
Faculty Academic English Program,
Bilkent University, Ankara

Over recent years increasing numbers of people worldwide use English for academic purposes, for teaching, learning and research. There is, thus, a clear need for an EAP conference focusing on tertiary level learning and instruction. The fact that EAP now deserves a setting all of its own, separate and distinct from ESP, has been raised in previous ESP SIG events and the annual IATEFL meeting in Cardiff this year.

This conference aims to explore the nature and challenges of EAP instruction at tertiary level, the role of EAP instructors and learners, and the instructor competencies required to equip learners for effective academic study beyond the EAP classroom.

It will bring together EAP practitioners and researchers from different international contexts to share perspectives, approaches and developments in EAP.

The event will also be supported by the British Association of Lecturers of English for Academic Purposes (BALEAP) and will use the Competency Framework for Teachers of English for Academic Purposes (2008), published by BALEAP, as a springboard for reflection on these issues.

Further details about the event can be found on the IATEFL SIG EVENTS website http://www.iatefl.org/events/sig-events and on
http://www.bilkent.edu.tr/~eapconf2010/index.html.

2nd PRISEAL Conference
Occupying niches: Interculturality, cross-culturality, and aculturality in academic research
Institute of English. University of Silesia. Sosnowiec/Katowice, Poland
9-11 June 2011

Call for papers
While the leading theme of PRISEAL 1 was "peripherality" as opposed to "the mainstream", we wish to look at the activity of the academic discourse community in terms of niches occupied by users of English as an Additional Language. How much of what is done in the niche gets outside? Is what is done in the niche what gets outside? To what extent is English a distorting mirror of the original ideas? Are these niches isolated linguistic and cultural cavities or are they connected by channels of English, or perhaps Englishes, and other languages? What part of one's culture/language is gained or lost in the process of publishing in English? With our leading theme set at Occupying niches: Interculturality, cross-culturality and aculturality in academic research, we hope to sparkle a vivid discussion on what is culture-bound, culture-free and cultured in the academic community and its practices.

Within the bounds of this perspective we invite proposals from the areas of applied linguistics, discourse analysis, translation and interpreting, and cultural studies. Aiming at a better understanding of the complex situation of users of English as an Additional Language we invite submissions from journal publishers, editors and referees, authors' editors and translators, conference interpreters, ERPP teachers, materials writers and course designers, and applied linguists.

Main sections proposed:
- Spoken and written discourse analysis
- Research genres
- Translation and interpreting

Send submissions (300-word abstract) by 15 November 2010
